Google drops its mobile-first indexing deadline, leaves it open-ended
Google said because of some difficulties that some sites may have moving to mobile-first indexing, it has decided to not move those sites over yet.
The deadline has been removed because after “analyzing the sites that are not yet indexed mobile-first” the company “determined that some of these sites are still not ready to be shifted over due to various, unexpected challenges that they’re facing.”
Google added that these “sites were facing unexpectedly difficult challenges and we wanted to accommodate their timelines.” Thus it was to be “thoughtful” of these sites and not move them over until they are ready.
Why I care: The deadline removal gives smaller to mid-size businesses an opportunity to update their website to a more mobile-friendly setup. Allowing them to compete with larger brands that have already taken the necessary steps.
Thinking Like Google: How to Practice People-First Philosophy for Better SEO | Seer Interactive
If you look past “best practices” and broad-based studies to parse what Google is actually trying to accomplish with its search engine, you can begin to shape some powerful, people-focused philosophy that can help to make your site (nearly) algorithm proof and help you deliver better content for your intended audience.
Why I care: SEO is a buzzword thrown around that can seem overly complicated. Mainly because out of all the strategies that can be implemented. This one takes time to truly show results. There are a lot of businesses that give up on a strategy before it gets a chance to pay off.
I'm sharing this article because of one of the ways to address the lack of confidence in SEO strategies. Is to change the perception of it. Let's simplify it down to what the goal of the search engines is and who they're trying to impress. Once you can wrap your head around that. The algorithms matter less because your strategy is based more on logic and common sense.
